SHELTON, Conn. -- Officials are calling hundreds of pages of sensitive personal information left piled in a Dumpster a mistake.

The documents, filled with personal information on city workers, were found in Shelton.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News learned of the discarded documents before the city knew they were missing. City officials and police learned of the documents when Eyewitness News called seeking comment.

The documents contained the names, addresses, birth dates and Social Security numbers on hundreds of pages on city workers.

The city had police seize the records they said were mistakenly discarded as an old school building was cleaned out.

"Anyone could have gone in there and stolen somebody's with identity theft today, it's all over the place. Somebody should be held responsible," said Shelton resident Michelle Zoppi.

Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti is quoted in published reports as blaming the mistake on town employees charged with cleaning out the building.

A police investigation into why the information wasn't shredded remains open.
