EXCLUSIVE: Navy Recruits' Personal Documents Found In Dumpster

Dozens of documents containing very personal information on local U.S. Navy recruits were found Friday night in a garbage dumpster.
It's a story that 9 News gathered exclusive information, reaction and video of.
The documents were located outside a Navy recruiting station located on Mall Road in Florence.
Outside a garbage dumpster isn't where you would normally find a Navy recruiter standing guard. But likely acting on a tip that 9 News was on the way, that's where a recruiter was Friday night. He had already picked some documents out, but he didn't find everything. 9 News Reporter Lance Barry found several additional pages.
It was similar paperwork to what Lisa Jackson and Marty Hollenbach,who work nearby, also found.
"(We found) birth certificate copies, social security numbers, drug tests," Jackson said.
"I went over because I wanted them to get it out of my dumpster, and the door was locked, nobody was there, so..." said Hollenbach.
So they called 9News. In an identity thief's dream, many of the documents contain names, phone numbers, and addresses. Another page shows a likely applicants high school ACT test scores. Still another page showed financial information on a personal home loan. All of the pages were unshredded.
"All I can think of is if that was one of my kids, and someone got a hold of their information and they were overseas, and they get back and they would be in debt," said Hollenbach.
The recruiter at the scene wasn't able to share any information on how or why the documents got from across the street to the dumpster.
"Has this been a problem in the past," asked Barry. "No," said Jackson.
The recruiter at the scene referred 9 News to a Public Affairs Officer based in Columbus. As of late Friday night we are yet to get a response from that officer.
We are told that Florence Police are investigating.
In total, the documents we obtained contained information on about 10 people. With the recruiter taking an armful as well, there is really no telling how many total could have been impacted. | |
