The U.S. Department of Justice announced today that their Office of Justice Programs (OJP) will fund $1.7 million in grants to aid victims of identity theft and fraud. This funding is intended to enhance existing programs and build upon law enforcements' responses to individuals.
According to the release, the Department of Justice understands the disastrous results of identity theft and plans to deal with this problem by providing both law enforcement and victim service groups the assets they need to offer relief to victims. Cybele Daley, Acting Assistant Attorney General for OJP, commented in the release, "The financial toll exacted by identity theft can be as devastating and emotionally traumatic as violent crime."
The release stated that the grants, which were given through the Office for Justice Programs' Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) earlier, went to national, regional, state and local victim service groups that are already giving aid to victims in order to expand their efforts. The release went on to name the following agencies as beneficiaries and identified their grant amounts:
-The Identity Theft Resource Center. This national identity theft organization received $500,000 to advance their on-going counseling and individual case work, and to add staff at its call center.
-The Texas Legal Service Center. This state and regional victim services office received $500,000 for the cost of running the Victims Initiative for Counseling, Advocacy, and Restoration of the Southwest (VICARS) project, which offers free legal services to identity theft victims in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Colorado. The Center also offers coaching on how to rebuild one's identity and credit.
-The Maryland Crime Victims' Resource Center. This program will receive $500,000 to improve current programming, to increase victims' services, to provide free legal services, and to develop self-advocacy and pro bono attorney programs.
