| | Nov 28: NCTA Charlotte WISE: Real Danger in a Virtual World (Charlotte)
Charlotte, N.C. The North Carolina Technology Association’s Charlotte (WISE) Women in Information Science and Engineering organization recognizes that while technology connects us to opportunity, real danger also exists in today’s virtual world. On Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 5:30 p.m. at Byron’s South End in Charlotte, meet renowned online safety consultant Linda Criddle, who will lead a discussion on factors that create online risks, and ways to identify predatory behavior and avoid danger online. Criddle will provide context for the current challenges and trends facing our products, our workforce and our families.
Frances Queen, founder and president of Queen Associates, Inc. and 2007 chairperson of NCTA Charlotte WISE, notes a frightening scenario. Imagine your child receives a request to be friends with another child her age in an online community, Queen says. They start a virtual dialogue in a chat room and decide to meet in person. They meet at a park after school. Only then does your child come to the horrible realization that this person is actually an Internet predator.
Or, say you post your profile on an online business network website hoping to increase your business, Queen says. You are contacted by a friend of a friend, of a friend, who has a job opportunity to discuss with you. So, you send them your resume and additional personal information. The next thing you know, your identity is stolen.
What people don’t know can hurt them. Online predators, identity theft, denial of service attacks, worms, and viruses that thrive on the anonymity of the Internet are just a few of the dangers to which users and businesses may expose themselves as they tap into the online world. Criddle will guide attendees through this maze.
Criddle currently has her own consulting company, LOOKBOTHWAYS Online Safety Consulting, LLC. Before establishing her company, Criddle spent 13 years at Microsoft Corporation, where she was a pioneer in online safety. She led the MSN division’s Internet safety, abuse tracking and incident response work and advised the company because of her deep understanding of online predatory behavior. Criddle’s ability to create practical technical and policy-based solutions is reflected in the patents she holds on Internet safety and emerging technologies. Criddle consults for major corporations internationally, trains law enforcement agencies, and advises a range of government entities, including the House of Lords in England and several State Attorneys General, She is author of the consumer-oriented book Look Both Ways: Help protect your family on the Internet, and maintains her website www.Look-both-ways.com where consumers can find her blog and safety tips. Criddle has just launched, together with Washington State University, her online course Internet Safety for Educators, and is currently developing a fully integrated K-12 Internet Safety education program for schools. A second book is under way to teach the industry how to build safer software.
